Description
-
Milley (born April 1810) was an enslaved Black child who lived on Stagville Plantation in what was historically Orange County, N.C. On a List of children born into slavery at Stagville, 1776-1842, it is noted that Milley was the daughter of Rhodey and Paymore (born about 1780).
-
Milley's name appears in two bills of sale from June 15, 1811: one from William Bennehan and Duncan Cameron to John Green, and another from John Green to Duncan Cameron and Thomas D. Bennehan. While it seems as though the sale from William Bennehan and Duncan Cameron likely happened first as Duncan Cameron was the administrator of William Bennehan’s posthumous affairs, it is ultimately unclear who claimed her in ownership, which is why we have not inferred a last name here.
