Washington is a city in and county seat of Wilkes County, Ga. The city was founded in 1774 when the land of the Muscogee people was claimed in ownership by white settler Stephen Heard. Washington, known initially as Heard's Ford, served briefly as the state capital of Georgia during the revolutionary war.
